Interior Decorating vs. Interior Design
Interior decorating is the art of decorating a residential home or business according to a client's personal preferences and style. This could involve selecting colors for wall paint and deciding where to place furniture.
Interior Design is both an art and a science, in fact there is a whole degree program affiliated with it. It is a multifaceted profession including: conceptual development, site inspections, space planning, programming, research, communicating with project stakeholders, construction management, and execution of the design. It is extremely technical and detailed as any design choices affect how the home is built or remodeled.
A great example would be something as simple as a showerhead installation. You select one and hand it over to a general contractor. You are then given a flurry of questions. Where should they install it? Is the rough plumbing in the proper place? You install the shower head too high and now the water angle is wrong, so you call the plumber back out but to fix it . Now you have to open up the wall and deal with costs you did not anticipate. Who would have thought a simple bathroom remodel could have been so difficult?
All these small details are understood by a seasoned Interior Designer, the more complicated your project the more you will need their expertise.
